Understanding Etsy SEO; how to rank higher on etsy

SEO is something we are known for teaching, and it’s a big part of why our students tend to see changes in their stats in about 3 to 4 weeks after updating their listings.

What not to do:

  • Don’t just copy what etsy best seller listings have in their titles verbatim. Many of those listings have cemented their position at the top of search results due to high revenue history or sales velocity, rather than modern SEO strategies.

Why this matters:

  • Just because a listing has sold well in the past doesn’t mean its SEO will get you to the top of search results. Titles only account for about 10% of your SEO, but the concepts here are crucial across all SEO areas.

Short Tail vs Long Tail Keywords

What is the difference?

  • Short tail keywords are usually 1-2 words, broad and general. Examples include necklace, handmade jewelry, spreadsheet, or wall art. While they typically have high search volume, they also come with higher competition and lower conversion rates.
  • Long tail keywords, on the other hand, are more specific phrases (3+ words) targeting a specific intent. Examples include rose gold dainty necklace or handmade leather bracelet. These keywords may have lower search volume and less competition, but they tend to lead to higher conversion rates.

Why Long Tail Keywords Matter

If you search for a short tail keyword like “necklace,” you’ll get a wide variety of results, making it harder to compete. Listings on the first page will be of high quality, but by the time you reach page 49 or even 199, the quality is much less predictable.

In contrast, with long tail keywords like handmade leather bracelet, the buyer’s intent is much more focused, increasing the likelihood of a purchase. The key to SEO is getting specific and catering to that intent.

The Keyword Stuffing Mistake

If you’ve seen our popular video on SEO in titles, you’ll know we focus on using a wide variety of long-tail keywords in a structured way that allows them to overlap. This strategy is very different from keyword stuffing, which packs a bunch of short-tail keywords together without structure.

Example of Keyword Stuffing:

  • “Summers’s heat 12 mm crystal necklace Bridal pink confetti Sparkle AB adjustable free shipping”

No one is searching for a combination of these keywords. It’s a bad example of keyword stuffing, as it lacks structure and intention.

Optimized Example:

Instead of stuffing keywords, here’s how you should structure them:

  • “Pink leopard print shirt, mommy and me outfit, cheetah print t-shirt, girls summer outfit, tie-dye blue tee, matching set”

This approach overlaps long-tail keywords to maximize exposure without keyword stuffing. Each phrase is distinct and has a purpose, such as targeting specific types of search queries.

The Impact on Conversion Rates

SEO is not just about increasing traffic. It’s about getting the right traffic—people ready to buy your product. An increase in visits means nothing if you’re not showing up in front of the right people.

For example, one of our students, Anna, saw a 48% increase in visits after SEO updates, but more importantly, she doubled her sales. Another student, Katie, went from $444 to $747 in monthly revenue, but the key change was in her conversion rate—proof that her SEO was getting her in front of the right people.

Relevance of Keywords

While the structure of your SEO is essential, the relevance of the keywords you use is just as important. Even if you’ve maximized your long-tail keywords, if they’re not relevant to your product, you won’t reach the right customers.

For example, don’t target “cat Halloween t-shirt” if your product is a dog Halloween t-shirt. Your keywords need to align with what your customer is actually searching for.

SEO Beyond the Product

It’s not just about the product, but also the purpose and utility of it. Think about the following when crafting your SEO:

  • What is the product for?
  • Who is the product for?
  • What occasion or event is it for?

These considerations are critical to improving the relevancy of your SEO, which in turn impacts your ranking and conversion rate.

Overcoming SEO Challenges

If you’re struggling with your SEO or feeling stuck like Fiona, who had no sales for a year and a half, or Dawn, who had a listing with five visits and no sales, it’s time to take different actions.

Feel free to schedule a free call with us to discuss your business. My team and I can help guide you toward strategies that will work for your shop and get you the results you’re looking for.

Action is Key

Buying a course or coaching won’t make you rich overnight. It’s about how you apply the knowledge and take action. As Alex Hormozi says, “The speed at which you make decisions or take action is the speed at which you grow.” If that resonates with you, we’d love to chat more.
